Baseball Sweep Jumbos for First Time Since 2012

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin baseball team completed the series sweep of Tufts with 7-5 and 12-5 wins on Saturday.
 
The Polar Bears (11-13, 4-2 NESCAC) had not taken a series from the Jumbos (17-6, 4-4 NESCAC) since sweeping Tufts back in 2012.
 
Game One Highlights
  • Tufts plated a pair of runs in the top of the first, but Bowdoin answered with one in the bottom half of the inning off an RBI by Gabe Peckler.
  • The Jumbos answered with another run in the second.
  • Bowdoin tied the game in the bottom of the second as Ben McKenzie scored and later knocked an RBI single.
  • Tufts put up a run in both the third and fourth innings to make it 5-3.
  • The Polar Bears exploded for four runs in the fourth and held the Jumbos scoreless through their final three at-bats.
  • Nick Merrill started the scoring with an RBI single to left and CJ Brito-Trinidad continued his hot streak with a two-run double to left center. Peckler plated Brito-Trinidad with another double.
  • McKenzie went 2-for-3 and Stephen Simoes went 2-for-4.
  • Jack Mullen pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits and three earned runs. Mullen fanned three batters.
 
Game Two Highlights
  • The Jumbos again took a first inning lead with a run to begin the game.
  • Peter DeMaria knocked a solo homer to straight away center in the fourth and another run later scored on an error.
  • Bowdoin got one run back in the bottom half of the inning with Gavin Cann's single through the right side.
  • Tufts extended its lead to 4-1 in the fifth, but Bowdoin tied things up in the bottom half.
  • Robbie McNamara started the scoring with a double down the right field line. McNamara and Simoes both crossed the plate when Brito-Trinidad hit another double to left center.
  • Bowdoin took its first lead of the game in the sixth as Cann scored and McNamara plated Bobby Pearl with a sacrifice fly to center.
  • Tufts cut the lead to one with a passed ball in the seventh.
  • The Polar Bears used the bottom half of the inning to extend its lead once again. Pearl tagged an RBI single down the left field line and McNamara plated two runs with a single to left.
  • Peckler capped the scoring with a three-run homer to right center in the eighth inning.
  • Simoes and Pearl went 2-for-4. Brito-Trinidad was 3-for-5 and McNamara was 2-for-3.
  • Jason Bagdanos allowed 11 hits and three earned runs with five strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work. Aidan Schrader pitched the remainder of the game without allowing a hit and fanning three.
