Women's Hoops Claims Season-Opening Tournament at UMass Dartmouth

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Bowdoin College women's basketball team came away with the Lafrance Hospitality Tournament crown, capping their season-opening weekend with a 77-61 win over host school UMass Dartmouth on Sunday afternoon. The Polar Bears stand at 2-0 this season while the Corsairs fall to 2-1.
 
Game Highlights
  • After Bowdoin held a 13-12 lead in the opening ten minutes, the Polar Bears exploded for 25 points in the second quarter to take a ten-point lead into the locker room, 38-28.
  • First-years Maria Belardi and Emily Collins sparked the late surge before intermission, scoring Bowdoin's last ten points going into the half.
  • The Corsairs responded with a big third quarter of their own, scoring 23 points in the frame and closing the gap to 54-51 heading into the fourth period.
  • Bowdoin scored the first six points of the final quarter to create a little space and, after the Corsairs drew to within six points again with three minutes to play, got back-to-back three-pointers from Annie Boasberg and Tori Beck to push the lead into double digits, 73-61, putting the game on ice.

  • Sydney Jones was named Tournament MVP with a 16-point performance, which also included seven rebounds and three assists.
  • Megan Tan had her second straight excellent outing, scoring 12 with five assists.
  • Annie Boasberg totaled 13 points, nine rebounds, and 3-4 shooting from three-point range.
  • Tori Beck added ten points and Jess Giorgio was tied for the team lead with nine rebounds.
  • Bowdoin finished at 36% shooting for the game, but scored 24 points off 20 UMD turnovers and owned a dominating 54-30 edge on the glass, scoring 23 second chance points

  • Bowdoin will return home for the Coastal Classic in Morrell Gymnasium next Friday and Saturday. The Polar Bears will open with Framingham State at 5:30 p.m., followed by Smith and Maine Maritime Academy at 7:30 p.m.
