Bowdoin Advances to NCAA Third Round With Penalty Kick Triumph Over Vassar

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Michael Webber made two saves in the penalty kick shootout and Bowdoin went 4-4 to advance over Vassar in the Second Round of the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament on Sunday at Pickard Field. Following the 1-1 tie in regulation, the Polar Bears (12-1-5) advance to the Third Round next weekend against SUNY Oneonta at a site to-be-determined. Vassar ends its season with a record of 9-3-7.

Game Highlights
  • In a game played through a continuous steady rain at Pickard Field with increasingly poor field conditions, the teams traded chances in the early part of the first half.
  • The Polar Bears had a pair of good early opportunities, but a curling shot by Harry Cooper was saved by Vassar's Eric Wnorowski in the 9th minute and a header by Charlie Ward sailed wide in the 11th.
  • Ryan Lane answered for the Brewers in the 17th minute as he delivered a hard, low shot to the right post that was stopped by Bowdoin's Michael Webber, keeping the game scoreless.
  • The Polar Beard broke through in the 32nd minute as Ward made a run down the right side and centered to Minseo Bae, who rocketed a shot off the post. The long rebound came directly to the foot of Carlton Steinberg, who banged home the rebound for a 1-0 lead at 31:06.
  • Bowdoin carried their 1-0 lead through intermission and had several good chances to put the contest away in the early going of the second period, but couldn't find the insurance goal they needed.
  • That proved costly when, with under 13 minutes remaining, a foul was called in the box against Bowdoin. Duncan Keker stepped up and buried the ensuing penalty kick to deadlock the game at 1-1.
  • In the first overtime session, Vassar had the better chance as a header by Jackson Hall sailed wide of the net.
  • Bowdoin's best chance came in the second session as Harry Cooper forced a nice save by Wnorowski to send the game to PKs.
  • In penalty kicks, Bowdoin was a perfect 4-4 as Dylan Reid, Harry Cooper, Ronaldo Cabral and Tyler Huck deposited their attempts. After an initial score by Vassar's Julian Funaro, Webber made diving stops on both Charlie Rodhouse and Jackson Hall to clinch the win.
By The Numbers
  • Bowdoin held a 17-12 shot advantage, including 9-6 on goal.
  • Wnorowski made eight saves while Webber stopped five for the Polar Bears.
  • The Polar Bears advance to the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history, joining the 2010 team, who advanced all the way to the national semifinals.
Up Next
  • Bowdoin will face SUNY Oneonta next Saturday, November 19 at a site to-be-announced. Game time, ticket information, and live coverage will be announced this week.
