Polar Bear Awards – Mike Ranen and Jen Fry
Awards presented for outstanding support of Bowdoin Athletics to an individual who works for Bowdoin, but not in Athletics, and to an individual who does not work at Bowdoin.

"Mike did an incredible job in keeping Bowdoin in a great atmosphere to continue on campus activities during this pandemic. Without his leadership I feel this would have been much different." – Dan Davies, Assistant AD for Sport Performance
Mike Ranen

"Jen played a pivotal role in supporting coaches, team leaders, and student-athletes with our antiracism and DEI efforts this year. Our department is in a considerably better place thanks to her time and dedication." – Brianne Smithson, women's soccer head coach

This trophy is presented to a member of any Bowdoin varsity team in recognition of "effort, cooperation and sportsmanship."

"Annie has been a phenomenal leader for our program and for Bowdoin College. She served as a captain this past season, and was instrumental in supporting the team through a pandemic. She has been a BSAAC leader for two years, and has been exceptional in that role. She has also been on the BSG from the fall of 2019 and has served on the DEI Committee this past year. In addition, she facilitates dialogues with Real Talk on Race." – Adrienne Shibles, former head coach of women's basketball

Anne LE Dane Award for Female Leadership – Lynn Farquhar, Women's Soccer
The Anne L.E. Dane Trophy honors the memory of the wife of Francis S. Dane, Class of 1896. It is awarded to the senior member of a women's varsity team who best exemplifies the highest qualities of character, courage and commitment to team play.

"Lynn is the once-in-a-career student-athlete who serves as the gold standard for everything we want in a team member, leader, and Bowdoin student.  She has been unanimously selected by the team as a team leader every year since the spring of her first year, which I have never seen before.  Her credibility, dedication, and determination as a leader are what has elevated our program to a positive and healthy culture today." – Brianne Smithson, women's soccer head coach

Frederick GP Thorne Award for Male Leadership – Max McPherron, Men's Soccer and Reid Brawer, Men's Track & Field
Named in honor of the former chairman of Bowdoin trustees, this award is given annually to the senior male student-athlete who outstanding leadership qualities- on and off the field- best reflect those exemplified by Mr. Thorne

"Max was a two year captain of our program. Although graduating and not able to compete this fall, Max was a driving force in our Antiracism and Social Justice discussions. Max was a thoughtful, engaged, held others accountable to the same standard. Our team is in a better place right now than it was in the fall as a result of his role in our leadership group." – Scott Wiercinski, men's soccer head coach

"Reid Brawer was the top long jumper and triple jumper in NESCAC this season. Despite the unusual school year, Reid never complained or got discouraged, but more importantly helped other athletes get into a positive frame of mind about the challenges we faced, and the opportunities we had." – Peter Slovenski, men's track & field head coach

Male Leadership Award

Wil Smith Award for Community Service – Aine Lawlor, Women's Soccer and Mary Laurita, Women's Swimming & Diving
Awarded to the student-athlete(s) judged most outstanding in terms of commitment to outstanding community service.

"Mary has been a rock star for us from the day she stepped on campus. She set school records, helped relays earn All-American honors and was ready to fight for her own national championship in the Spring of 2020 before the shutdown. But she volunteered for as many things on campus as anyone, including greatly expanding the Friday Fun Swim, a weekly swim lesson program for special-needs children." – Brad Burnham, swimming & diving head coach

"Aine has been the most hands-on and involved student-athlete I have coached in my nine years at Bowdoin.  She is a fully dedicated member of our team while also serving as a writing assistant for the Baldwin Center, a tour guide for Admissions, a leader for the BOC, McKeen Center Alternative Spring Break and Orientation trip leader, among numerous other things. She has truly embodied the ideals put forth for Bowdoin students to emulate and, most impressively, is able to balance and fully commit to every one of her endeavors." – Brianne Smithson, women's soccer head coach
