Softball Opens Season at Amherst in First Games of 2021

AMHERST, Mass. – The Bowdoin softball team returned to the field after more than a year, facing off against Amherst in a pair of NESCAC crossover games to begin the Polar Bears' season. Bowdoin suffered a tight 5-4 loss in the opener, before a 10-2 setback in the second game.

The Polar Bears (0-2) saw multiple NESCAC East games canceled to begin their year, but traveled to the unbeaten Mammoths (5-0) to get the season rolling.

Game One Highlights
  • In her first at-bat of the season, Katryna Dukehart homered to right center in the top of the first. The sophomore has appeared in two career games for the Polar Bears and has tallied homers in both.
  • Amherst responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning, to take a 4-1 lead. The Mammoths added their fifth and final run of the game in the bottom of the third.
  • Bowdoin rallied with runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Caroline Sablone tagged a two-run single, while Kasey Cunningham stole second and eventually came around to score on the play.
  • Despite having runners on third in both the sixth and seventh innings, Bowdoin was unable to plate the tying run.
  • Ruby Siltanen suffered the loss in the circle, allowing 11 hits and five earned runs. Siltanen struck out one and walked a pair.

Game Two Highlights
  • Amherst leapt into the lead with four runs in both the first and second innings.
  • The Polar Bears got on the board in the top of the third. Lilly Armstrong blasted a triple to right center, driving in Sablone and Natasha Fingar.
  • The Mammoths added runs in the third and fourth, while preventing Bowdoin from closing the gap to extend the game.
  • Abby Allen suffered the loss, allowing five hits.
  • Maddie Rouhana joined Armstrong with an extra base hit, doubling to leadoff the fourth.

Up Next
  • The Polar Bears are scheduled to play their NESCAC East series with Bates next weekend.
