BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College men's basketball team survived its final home game of the opening semester, coming away with a 71-70 win over Husson on Wednesday evening in Morrell Gymnasium.
The Polar Bears improve to 7-2 on the season with the win while the Eagles drop to 4-3 on the year.
Game Highlights
- Bowdoin was able to open up an eight-point lead in the opening half thanks to seven early points from Xander Werkman, and owned a 24-16 edge midway through the period.
- Husson rallied to get back into the contest on the strength of 10 first-half points from DJ Bussey, and used a 7-0 run to end the half to take their largest lead of the night, 46-39.
- Three-pointers from Afamdi Achufusi and Michael Simonds to open the second half quickly got Bowdoin back into the contest, as the Polar Bears regained the lead just 3:30 into the stanza.
- The teams traded blows throughout the second half with neither squad leading by more than four points and the lead exchanging eight times.
- Bowdoin had a four-point lead with under three minutes to play before a pair of Husson free throws cut the lead to two points, 69-67.
- After the teams traded scoreless possessions, a three-pointer from J Thomas gave the visitors a 70-69 lead with 1:25 to go.
- Bowdoin missed three shots in the final minute, but was able to force a pair of Husson turnovers to give them a chance with under 15 seconds to go.
- Following a Bowdoin inbounds pass with under ten seconds left, Manav Randawaha slipped in the lane, but found Xander Werkman from the floor on the baseline. Werkman was fouled in the act of shooting and buried a pair of free throws to give the Polar Bears a 71-70 lead with 3.7 seconds remaining.
- Husson had to go the length of the floor after a timeout, and couldn't get off a potential game-winning shot as Bowdoin clung to the win.

- Michael Simonds finished with 20 points for Bowdoin to go with eight rebounds while Xander Werkman had 19 points, seven rebounds and a pair of steals.
- James McGowan also saw double digits for Bowdoin with ten points.
- Husson was led by 14 points from DJ Bussey in the loss.
- Bowdoin ended at 44% shooting for the game to Husson's 41% and held a 44-36 edge in rebounding.
- The Polar Bears were able to overcome 19 turnovers thanks to 12 three-pointers on the night, including four from Simonds and two apiece from McGowan, Afamdi Achufusi and Manav Randhawa.
