Field Hockey Secures NESCAC Quarterfinal Victory Against Amherst

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin field hockey team punched its ticket to the NESCAC Semifinals with a 1-0 Saturday win over Amherst.

The Polar Bears (11-5) earned a redemption win over the Mammoths (13-3) who defeated host Bowdoin in the conference opener back in September by a 2-1 margin.

Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin came out of the gate with a goal 1:09 into the game. On the game's first penalty corner, Caroline Higgins inserted to Manveer Sandhu at the top of the circle. Sandhu fired a shot towards net, with Higgins defecting the ball in from the left post.
  • The two teams played physical back and forth field hockey throughout the first 30 minutes. The midfield action resulted in only four total shots in the first half, with three on net.
  • Both teams managed more time in the circles during the fourth quarter, totaling three shots each.
  • The Mammoths earned a penalty corner in the final seconds of play, but Maddie Ferrucci turned away the initial shot and Georgie Coezter cleared the rebound over the sideline.

By the Numbers
  • Bowdoin held an 8-4 advantage in shots, including four in the final quarter.
  • Amherst held a slight 6-5 edge in corners.
  • Ferrucci made four saves for the shutout.
  • Sara Nidus made four stops for Amherst.
