First Half Sinks Men's Basketball in Loss to Amherst

BRUNSWICK, Maine – A strong first half led the Amherst College men's basketball team to a 91-80 win at Bowdoin on Friday evening in Morrell Gymnasium.

The Mammoths improve to 15-6 (5-2 NESCAC) while the Polar Bears fall to 7-14 (2-6).

Game Highlights

  • The visitors jumped out to a 7-0 lead, sparked by a Garrett Day three-pointer to come out of the gate early.
  • Bowdoin rolled off a 8-3 surge to come within two points on a Taiga Kagitomi layin, 10-8, five minutes into the contest.
  • Amherst responded with a 11-3 run, capped by a running lay-in by Grant Robinson, to push the lead to double figures, 21-11, and continued to roll, shooting 55% from the field and extending their advantage to 19 points at the break, 49-30.
  • After Amherst extended its lead to 21 points early in the second half, Bowdoin began chipping away, going on a 13-2 run to draw within ten points, 55-45, on a pair of Drew Gagnon free throws with 13:32 to go.
  • The lead was still ten points, 61-51, with 12 minutes on the clock before both teams went quiet for a three-minute stretch. Bowdoin could get no closer and Amherst pulled away with a 12-2 run over the course of the next four minutes to put the contest out of reach.

By The Numbers

  • Garrett Day led all players with 25 points in the victory for Amherst while four other Mammoths saw double digits.
  • Bowdoin had four players in double figures, paced by 18 points from Sam Grad, who also had nine rebounds.
  • David Reynolds had 14 points while Stephen Ferraro (11) and Taiga Kagitomi (10) also reached double digits.
  • Amherst finished at 50% shooting for the game and held Bowdoin to 44% while cashing in for 19 points off nine Polar Bears turnovers.
  • Despite shooting only 5-22 from three-point range, Bowdoin outscored Amherst 50-42 in the second half.
