Trinity Buzzer Beater Sinks Women's Hockey in Overtime

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Claudia Capone scored an empty-netter from the Trinity zone as time expired to lift the Bantams to a 2-1 overtime win over Bowdoin women's hockey on Thursday evening.

The game was non-conference and will not alter either team's NESCAC record. The Polar Bears are 4-4-1 while the Bantams are 4-3-0.

Game Highlights

  • Bowdoin scored 2:19 into the second period to take a 1-0 lead. Meg Galanos took a feed from Brett Stoddard and skated across the crease, putting a shot on net. Kai-Lilly Karpman denied the first shot but Galanos put her own rebound in the back of the net.
  • Trinity evened the game four minutes into the third. Angelina Mushenko carried down the left side and flicked a shot short side just under the crossbar.
  • Dani Marquez made 14 saves in the final frame, including back-to-back stops on close range shots from Ethel Wilhelmsson on a power play.
  • Marquez made a sprawling save in overtime, prone on the ice with no stick, the sophomore connected leg pad with puck to keep the Polar Bears alive.
  • The sophomore stood tall again as Karinna Cave-Hawkins stripped the puck off a Bowdoin player in front of the Polar Bear bench and skated one-on-goal. Marquez came out to meet Cave-Hawkins and shut down the potential game-winner.
  • With a faceoff in the Trinity zone and four seconds remaining in overtime, Bowdoin pulled Marquez in favor of an extra skater. Lily Kate Delaney won the faceoff and kicked the puck back to Claudia Capone who saucered a shot to the far end and into Bowdoin's empty net as the buzzer sounded.
