Women's Volleyball Fends Off Huskies in Home Opener

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College volleyball team shook off a third set loss to take a 3-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine in its home opener at Morrell Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.

The Polar Bears improve to 2-2 this season while the Huskies fall to 3-4 overall.

Match Highlights

  • The Polar Bears cruised in the first two sets and rebounded from a third-set loss in a 25-11, 25-9, 18-25, 25-22 victory.
  • Bowdoin jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first set and capped the win with a pair of Sophia Pahl kills to seal it.
  • In the second, Bowdoin opened up an early 14-3 advantage en route to the victory, clinching on Cori Gray's ace and a USM attack error to open up a 2-0 advantage.
  • USM climbed back into the contest with an impressive bounce-back third set, fending off several Bowdoin runs and finishing the set on a 4-0 run, sparked by a Kylee Austin service ace.
  • The Huskies appeared poised to force a fifth set when they opened up an 18-13 advantage in the fourth stanza, but Bowdoin came out of a timeout and went on a 6-0 run on Lexie Freund's service to take the lead. The Polar Bears would not trail again as they put the match away on a Caroline Flaharty kill.

By The Numbers

  • Every Polar Bear got into Tuesday's match for Bowdoin with 16 different players seeing time for the hosts.
  • Twelve different Bowdoin players recorded kills, paced by eight from Sophia Pahl and seven from Cori Gray. Gray also had seven total blocks.
  • Ella Haugen had 18 assists while Emily King had 25 digs.
  • Southern Maine was led by 19 assists and 10 digs from Sophie Lindsay.
  • The Huskies received a team-best seven kills from Kacey Foerster.

  • Bowdoin will return to action on Friday night when they open play at the MIT Invitational against Wellesley in a rematch of last Friday's season-opener at 6:30 p.m.
  • USM will return to action on Saturday in Connecticut when they head to Trinity to face the host Bantams along with Simmons.
