Women's Tennis Knocks Off Third-Ranked Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. – The Bowdoin women's tennis team upset third-ranked Amherst 5-4 on Saturday afternoon.

The Mammoths are 6-2, with their only other setback of the season coming against top-ranked Emory. The Polar Bears, who entered the week ranked 14th in the nation, are 8-2, with their only spring season loss coming to Wesleyan the previous outing.

Match Highlights

  • Bowdoin owned a 2-1 advantage after doubles. Fleming Landau and Sasa Jovanovic combined for a commanding 8-3 victory at three doubles. Izzy Essi and Tasha Christ fought for an 8=7 win at number two.
  • The bottom half of the lineup came up for the Polar Bears who won four through six singles, all in three sets.
  • Jovanovic earned the first singles point for Bowdoin at number five. After dropping the opening set, she came back for a 3-6, 6-0. 6-2 victory.
  • With Amherst up 4-3 overall, Essi earned a win at four singles to even the team scoring. The sophomore also fell in her opener, but rebounded for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 final.
  • With four wins apiece, the match came down to the number six singles match. Landau clinched the win for Bowdoin with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 final.
