Late Jumbos Goal Sinks Men's Hockey in Final Game of the Semester

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Tufts men's hockey team took its only lead of the day with five minutes remaining in regulation and skated away with a 5-4 victory over Bowdoin on Saturday evening.

Game Highlights

  • Bowdoin went ahead 1-0 at 6:36 in the opening period. Bradley Ingersoll snapped a shot bar down from the high slot.
  • The Polar Bears doubled their lead on the power play midway through the frame. Graham Rutledge and Joe Alexander traded the puck high in Jumbos territory, with Rutledge taking a shot from the right point. Ethan Kimball set a screen and deflected the puck to the far post.
  • Tufts broke through with 5:11 remaining in the period. Edward Hannon dished a backhanded pass to Nick Shultze on the far right post for a clean look into the back of the net.
  • The Jumbos came out and evened the game 3:12 into the second. Ross Delabruere took a hard shot on pads and Angus Scott slipped the rebound through.
  • Bowdoin regained the lead 30 seconds later. Caleb Perez found Bobby Pearl in the defensive zone and Pearl sent a long breakout pass to Albert Washco behind the Tufts defense. Washco handled down the ice and bested Josh Sarlo.
  • The game was tied 3-3 at 7:24. Brendan Skarda took a hard shot from the top of the Bowdoin zone and Alex Zafonte kicked a long rebound to the far left side. Machlan Sawden buried the puck.
  • Again, less than a minute later, the Polar Bears answered. This time Pat Geary one-timed a feed from Rutledge.
  • The teams headed into the second intermission tied 4-4 following a power play goal from Scott. Scott put away a rebound off Cooper Stahl's initial shot.
  • The Jumbos took their first lead of the game with five minutes remaining in regulation. Justin Brandt had the puck on the left boards and found Michael Gordon in the middle for the game-winner.

  • Tufts went 1-for-4 in the power play.
  • The Polar Bears were 1-for-6 on the power play.
  • Sarlo made 36 stops for the Jumbos.
  • Zafonte made 30 saves for Bowdoin.
