Volleyball Returns to NESCAC Final With Dramatic Win Over Wesleyan

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Bowdoin College volleyball team rallied past second-seeded Wesleyan to advance to the NESCAC Championship match in a dramatic 3-2 victory on Saturday afternoon.

The third-seeded Polar Bears avenge two early-season losses at the hands of the Cardinals and improve to 18-6 while Wesleyan falls to 20-4 on the season.

Match Highlights

  • Bowdoin carried the day with set scores of 25-17, 19-25, 26-28, 25-22, 16-14.
  • The Polar Bears took command in the opening set, using a 6-0 surge midway through to open up a 21-13 advantage en route to a 1-0 lead.
  • The Cardinals used a late 5-0 run to win the second set, closing out the Polar Bears and evening the score at 1-1.
  • The third set was a battle with the teams trading points, including ties at 24-24, 25-25, and 26-26. Late kills by Bella Ahearn and Nicole Hilton gave Wesleyan the clinching points as they took a 2-1 advantage in sets.
  • Bowdoin showed its resilience in the fourth set, as the Cardinals jumped to a 7-3 lead only to see the Polar Bears rally to even the score at 7-7. With the Polar Bears holding a late 23-22 edge, Sophia Pahl notched a kill and Ahearn had an attack error to knot the match at two apiece.
  • In the tiebreaking fifth set, Bowdoin took an early 7-3 edge but the Cardinals rallied to even the score at 9-9. The teams traded points until 14-14 when Caroline Flaharty gave Bowdoin the lead for good and a block by Jaida Hodge-Adams and Cori Gray clinched the win for the Polar Bears.
