BRUNSWICK, Maine – Lizzie Clarke scored two goals in the final four minutes to lead the Hamilton field hockey team to a 2-1 upset victory over Bowdoin in the NESCAC Quarterfinals.
The Polar Bears (14-2) earned the number two seed in the NESCAC following a 9-1 regular season record in conference play. The Continentals (9-7) were ranked seventh after going 4-6 in the NESCAC.
Game Highlights
- Michaela Giuttari put together the first serious threat of the game, breaking away down the left side and firing a hard cross to the far post a minute into the third quarter. Giuttari's shot went wide and no one was able to tip the ball.
- Bowdoin pinned Hamilton in its defensive end for the majority of the third quarter. The Polar Bears did not let the Continentals clear beyond the fifty for a six minute stretch of time and took three corners.
- Faith Jennings broke the scoreless tie with five minutes remaining in the quarter. Manveer Sandhu worked the ball down the right side towards the corner and sent a long cross to the opposite post. Jennings tipped the ball into the net for a 1-0 Bowdoin lead.
- Hamilton earned a penalty stroke with four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Clarke successfully put her shot inside the post to tie the game.
- Two minutes later, Clarke scored the game-winner on a penalty corner. Maura Holden inserted to Clarke at the top who blasted a shot towards net. The ball deflected up off a stick in the circle and into the net.
