Bashaw OT Game-Winner Nets Field Hockey Win Over Hamilton

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Abby Bashaw scored seven minutes into overtime to lift the Bowdoin field hockey team to a 3-2 win over visiting Hamilton on Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears (8-1, 5-1 NESCAC) scored two goals in the first half of action, but the Continentals (3-6, 1-5 NESCAC) scored a pair of third quarter goals to force overtime.

Game Highlights

  • Peyton Jackson intercepted a Hamilton pass coming out of the circle and swept a quick ball to Abby Bashaw. Bashaw fired a reverse sweep past a sliding Maggie Reville to give Bowdoin a 1-0 lead 3:56 into play.
  • Elizabeth Growney doubled the Polar Bear lead, connecting with a high rebound on the right post late in the second quarter.
  • Hamilton evened the game quickly, striking twice in the span of 1:10 early in the third quarter. Maura Holden inserted on a Continental corner and later recovered the ball on the right post, pushing her shot to the far side.
  • Another Hamilton corner gave the visitors an equalizer. Holden inserted to Cat Donahue who took a direct that rattled the back of the cage.
  • It took seven minutes of overtime play before Bashaw put away the game-winner. Elle Brine carried into the circle and offered a flat pass to Bashaw who poked it into Reville and past her feet.

By the Numbers

  • Reville made 18 saves for the Continentals.
  • Maddie Ferrucci made three stops.
  • Bowdoin held a 26-8 shot advantage and 16-5 edge in corners.
  • Jackson had a defensive save in the first quarter.
