Big Plays Sink Football In Road Loss at Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. - The Bowdoin College football team stayed within striking distance, but Amherst used a pair of third-quarter touchdowns to pull away in an eventual  31-14 victory on Saturday afternoon at Pratt Field.

The Mammoths remain unbeaten at 3-0 this season while the Polar Bears fall to 0-3.

Game Highlights

  • Amherst got on the board on their second play from scrimmage in the game when Jack Hickey split the Bowdoin defense for a 52-yard touchdown run.
  • Bowdoin replied later in the quarter, marching 76 yards on six plays, as quarterback Griff Stalcup found Nick Vailas twice for big gains, the second time a 36-yard touchdown strike to tie the game at 7-7.
  • The Mammoths scored on their first possession of the second quarter, ending an eight-play, 83-yard drive with a three-yard rush from Hasani Figueroa to take a 14-7 edge. Amherst added a field goal before the half to take a 17-7 lead at intermssion.
  • After Bowdoin went three-and-out on their first offensive possession of the second half, Amherst got a big punt return from Nate Tyrell, setting up a 38-yard touchdown pass from Ollie Eberth to James O'Regan.
  • An interception on Bowdoin's next drive set up another Amherst score - this time a 23-yard rush from Eberth to make it 31-7.
  • Bowdoin was able to trim into the lead in the fourth quarter as a 12-play, 65-yard drive ended with a 24-yard pass from Stalcup to Bryan Porter, cutting the final score to 31-14.

By The Numbers

  • Amherst posted 210 yards rushing in the win, getting 118 from Hickey.
  • Bowdoin couldn't get their running game in gear against the Mammoths, totaling just 64 yards rushing and finishing with 215 yards of total offense.
  • Quarterback Griff Stalcup went 12-22 for 151 yards and two touchdowns in the loss. Bryan Porter caught five passes for 65 yards while Vailas caught two passes for 60.
  • Ryan Sanborn led Bowdoin with eight tackles. Chris Vachow had a sack and a fumble recovery for the Polar Bears.

Up Next

  • Bowdoin will play their third road game of the season next Saturday when they travel to Tufts for a 1:30 p.m. kick-off.
