Field Hockey Returns to Ryan Field With Six Goal Win

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin field hockey team cruised to a 6-0 home opening victory against Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears pick up their second consecutive NESCAC win to climb to 2-1 (2-1 NESCAC). The Cardinals suffer their first conference setback of the season and fall to 1-2 (0-1 NESCAC).

Game Highlights

  • Bowdoin scored just 1:55 into the game, successfully converting on a penalty corner. Elle Brine inserted the ball to Elizabeth Bennewitz who rifled off a shot from the top of the circle for a 1-0 lead.
  • Three minutes later, Kara Finnerty stepped in for a deflection to double Bowdoin's tally. Bennewitz again fired a shot from the top, with Finnerty stepping in at the stroke line to deflect the ball beyond Dulaney Wood.
  • Finnerty notched an assist on the Polar Bears next goal, coming 13:02 in the game. Finnerty controlled the ball on the right side of the end line and fed Sarah Jane Weill in the middle for a quick redirect.
  • Midway through the first half, Juliana Fiore tagged an unassisted goal to put Bowdoin up 4-0. Fiore collected a loose ball rebound and turned back on net to slip a shot past Wood.
  • The Polar Bears final goal of the half came with just 31 second remaining. Elizabeth Growney sent a reverse sweep towards the net, with Emma Stevens stepping in to deflect it into the back of the net.
  • Bowdoin's final goal came with just under ten minutes left in the game. Stevens again tallied the goal, this time with a feed from Laura Cooper who worked the ball down the right side and centered from the end line.

By the Numbers

  • Bowdoin outshot Wesleyan by a 27-1 margin and held a 7-2 edge in corners.
  • Wood made 14 saves in the game, including 10 in the second half.
  • Maddie Ferrucci and Eva Verzani both saw time in net for the Polar Bears.
