Women's Tennis Falls to Middlebury in NESCAC Semifinals

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Bowdoin College women's tennis team battled top-seeded Middlebury but fell in a 5-2 decision in the semifinals of the NESCAC Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Williams.

The Polar Bears dip to 14-5 on the season and are likely to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Championship when selections are announced on Monday.

  • Down 2-0 after two doubles losses to open the day, Bowdoin's #3 pairing of Pilar Giffenig and Sasa Jovanovic rallied for a key 9-8 victory, making the deficit just 2-1 after doubles play.
  • Bowdoin lost the first two singles matches off the board at #2 and #3 but received a straight-set win from Joulia Likhanskaia at #1 (7-5, 6-3) to cut the lead to 4-2.
  • Despite rallying from behind in the second set, Giffenig couldn't close the gap against her opponent at #5 singles, as Middlebury clinched the match with a 6-3, 7-5 win.
