Bates Pulls Out Late Victory Over Bowdoin in Men's Basketball

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bates College men's basketball team closed the game on an 11-2 run over the final five minutes to rally for a 64-59 victory over Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon at Morrell Gymnasium.

The Bobcats complete a season sweep of the Polar Bears and improve to 11-3 (2-0 NESCAC) while the Polar Bears dip to 7-6 (0-2 NESCAC). 

Game Highlights

  • The teams traded blows in an evenly-played opening half as the Bobcats carried a 31-30 edge into the break on the strength of five three-pointers, including three from Tom Coyne.
  • The Bobcats scored the first five points of the second half to open up a six-point lead, 36-30, before Bowdoin rallied to take the lead.
  • Consecutive three-pointers from Tim Ahn sparked a 13-4 Polar Bear run to give the hosts a 43-40 edge following a jumper from Jack Simonds with 13:58 to go.
  • After a dunk by Malcolm Delpeche closed the gap to 43-42, Bowdoin rolled off a quick 8-0 run, capped by a Hugh O'Neil layup to give the Polar Bears a 51-42 lead with 9:03 to go.
  • Coyne singlehandedly brought the Bobcats back, scoring nine consecutive points to tie the game at 51 apiece with 7:06 remaining.
  • The teams traded buckets until the four-minute mark when a pair of Jack Simonds free throws gave Bowdoin a 59-57 lead with 3:50 to go.
  • Coyne answered with a long three-pointer to key a game-ending 7-0 run as the Polar Bears did not score again.

By The Numbers

  • Coyne led all players with 23 points, including five three-pointers for Bates. He was the lone Bobcat in double digits.
  • Simonds paced Bowdoin with 17 while Hugh O'Neil had 13 with ten rebounds.
  • David Reynolds pitched in 12 points off the bench for the Polar Bears.
  • Bates held a 39-29 edge in rebounding, making up for 15 turnovers as opposed to eight for Bowdoin.
  • The Bobcats finished at 43% shooting from the field to 39% for Bowdoin and connected on eight three-pointers to just four for the Polar Bears.
