MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The Middlebury men's soccer team needed an overtime penalty kick goal by Kirk Horton to slip past Bowdoin 2-1 on Saturday.

Horton's goal came on a penalty kick with 2:55 left in the first 10-minute extra session. The 19th-ranked Panthers (4-0-1, 2-0-1) continue conference play Tuesday at Hamilton with a 4:30 p.m. start, while the Polar Bears (3-2-1, 1-2-1) are home tomorrow, hosting Husson at 2:00 p.m.

Game Highlights

• Middlebury had the best scoring chance in the opening 45 minutes of play as the Panthers had a direct kick from just outside of the Bowdoin penalty area in the final minute. Adam Glaser served the ball toward the net where Greg Conrad fired a shot off of the left post. Jeremy Barovick got off a second shot for Middlebury, but his scoring bid was blocked by a Polar Bear defender
• After the half, the Panthers netted the game's first goal when Drew Goulart carried the ball up the field and fed Glaser with a pass. Glaser tucked a shot into the upper left corner of the net giving the hosts a 1-0 lead with 7:26 expired
• Bowdoin forced overtime with a late goal when Jason Oliver scored with 4:59 left in regulation. Oliver directed a shot into the upper left corner of the net after Ethan Ellsworth sent the ball across the Middlebury penalty area
• In overtime, the Panthers were awarded a penalty kick after a player was taken down in the penalty area. Horton took the kick, sending a shot into the right side of the net for the game winner and his first tally of the season.
• Bowdoin's Stevie Van Siclen had five saves in the loss
• The Panthers held a 13-8 advantage in shots and took five of the seven corner kicks
