Box Score BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin women's soccer team collected its first NESCAC win of the season with a 3-0 midweek shutout of visiting Bates.
The Polar Bears (2-1-0, 1-1-0 NESCAC) rebounded from Saturday's overtime loss and handed the Bobcats (2-2-0, 0-2-0 NESCAC) their second conference setback.
Game Highlights
- Sophia Lemmer gave Bowdoin the early lead, notching her first collegiate goal, 10:34 into the first half. Lemmer forced Bates keeper Sarah McCarthy out of net to challenge a long feed into the box from Morgen Gallagher. With McCarthy committed to the play, Lemmer settled the ball on the right post and netted a shot to the opposite side.
- Holding onto the one goal lead through the remainder of the opening half, Bowdoin looked to double its tally in the opening ten minutes of the second. Following a corner kick, the Polar Bears forced a defensive scramble on the left post that ended with the ball in McCarthy's hands.
- The Bobcat defense came up with two more big saves twenty minutes into the half as Julia Bottone took a shot from close range that McCarthy denied with a left hand save, only to see Eliza Nitzan collect the rebound. Nitzan's one-timer was blocked on the goal line by Sarah Gutch.
- The Polar Bears put up one final tally in the 85th minute as Anna Mellman one-timed a bouncing rebound to the far left post for the team's third goal of the afternoon.
- Bowdoin held an 18-8 edge in shots, with the Bobcats earning a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. McCarthy ended the day with nine saves while Rachel Stout made three for the Polar Bears.
