LEWISTON, Maine - Fifth-seeded Wesleyan University swept doubles play and won two of the first three decided singles matches to defeat fourth-seeded Bowdoin on Friday morning in the first round of the NESCAC Women's Tennis Championship.
Wesleyan (11-4) collected its first program victory in the NESCAC tournament. The Polar Bears (12-6) edged out the Cardinals in a 5-4 final during the regular season.
Match Highlights
- The Cardinals seized a 3-0 lead in doubles. Victoria Yu and Aashli Budhiraja started it off with an 8-3 victory over Kyra Silitch and Tess Trinka at second doubles. Eudice Chong and Helen Klass-Warch registered an 8-5 win over Joulia Likhanskaia and Tiffany Cheng at first doubles while Nicole McCann and Danica Dubinski defeated Pilar Giffenig and Maddie Rolph 8-5.
- The number one singles matchup reprised the 2015 NCAA Division III singles championship match between Chong and Likhanskaia, with Chong coming away with a 6-2, 6-1 victory to make it 4-0 in Wesleyan's favor.
- Bowdoin earned a point at third singles, with Silitch defeating Klass-Warch 6-3, 6-3. But the Cardinals clinched the victory minutes later, as Budhiraja finished off Trinka 6-2, 6-3 at four singles.
