CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Bowdoin College women's tennis team knocked off the nation's top-ranked team, Pomona Pitzer, in a 5-4 decision on Tuesday night in California.
The Polar Bears (2-0) are ranked eighth in the latest ITA Division III poll and earn their first-ever win over a top-ranked team. The Sagehens fall to 8-2 overall.
Match Highlights
- Bowdoin led Pomona-Pitzer 2-1 following doubles play. Joulia Likhanskaia and Tiffany Cheng won 8-5 at #1 and Pilar Giffenig and Maddie Rolph went 8-6 at #3.
- Likhanskaia earned the first singles win of the day with a straight set victory (6-3, 6-4) and #1.
- The Sagehens earned consecutive wins at #2 and #6 to even the match at 3-3.
- Rolph captured a three-set victory at five singles (6-1, 2-6, 6-4) to give the lead back to Bowdoin.
- Seconds after Pomona-Pitzer tied the match at 4-4, Kyra Silitch clinched the win at #4 with a 7-6, 6-3 victory.
