Curle and Brady Lead Women's Basketball Over Bates

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team defeated Bates for the second time in a week, 72-55, on Saturday afternoon at Morrell Gymnasium.

The Polar Bears, who beat the Bobcats in a non-conference game 82-54 in Lewiston last weekend, improve to 10-3 (1-1 NESCAC). Bates falls to 3-9 (0-2 NESCAC) with the loss.

Game Highlights

  • In a game that was considerably closer than last weekend's tilt at Alumni Gym, the Polar Bears took the lead for good in the second quarter but couldn't put the Bobcats away until late in the fourth quarter
  • Tied at 11 after the opening period, Bowdoin rolled off a 9-0 run midway through the second quarter, sparked by two Marle Curle three-pointers, to take a nine-point lead late in the half
  • Bowdoin carried a 31-22 lead into halftime
  • Bates got as close as five points on two occasions in the third quarter, but Bowdoin answered every Bobcat run
  • Shannon Brady keyed a 9-2 run to close the period as Bowdoin entered the final quarter with a 53-41 lead
  • Bates could get no closer than seven points in the final quarter as the Polar Bears walked away with the win

By The Numbers

  • Marle Curle came within a few rebounds of a triple-double, totaling 13 points, 11 assists and six rebounds in the win for Bowdoin
  • Shannon Brady led all players with 24 points while also blocking three shots and grabbing five rebounds for the Polar Bears
  • Bates was led by 17 from Nina Davenport, who also had nine rebounds and three steals
  • Chelsea Nason had 14 points, including four three-pointers for the Bobcats
  • Bates was able to stay within striking distance thanks, in part, to a 43-40 edge in rebounding, which included 15 offensive boards that were cashed in for 12 second-chance points
  • Bowdoin's depth was the difference, however, as the Polar Bears got 22 bench points compared to just two for Bates

Up Next

  • The Polar Bears will host Emmanuel in a non-conference game on Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m.
  • Bates will travel to Endicott for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off on Tuesday night
