Field Hockey Stays Perfect with 2-1 Win Over Middlebury

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Rachel Kennedy scored both goals for the Bowdoin field hockey team in a 2-1 victory over Middlebury in a rematch of last year's NESCAC Championship game.

The second ranked Polar Bears remain perfect on the season with a 6-0 record, including a 5-0 mark in conference play. Fourth ranked Middlebury suffers its first lost of the season to fall to 4-1 (3-1 NESCAC). The Panthers and Polar Bears split games last season as Bowdoin captured a win at Middlebury during the regular season, with the Panthers notching a victory for the conference championship.

How It Happened

  • Just under four minutes into play, Bowdoin was awarded a penalty stroke. Kennedy missed the net and both teams traded possession and opportunity throughout the remainder of the half.
  • Kennedy put Bowdoin on top 1-0 with six seconds remaining in the opening half, finishing off a feed from Juliana Fiore. Fiore worked the right sideline and cut across the endline before making a quick centering pass to Kennedy.
  • Middlebury evened the game with 10:17 remaining in regulation off a successfully executed corner. Annie Leondard cleanly stopped Jillian Green's insert for the Panthers and riffled off a shot from the top of the circle.
  • The Panther's successfully defended a pair of corners in the final ten minutes to keep the game tied.  Middlebury successfully defended 17 corners against the Polar Bears, as Bowdoin held a 17-10 edge in the category and was unable to convert on any opportunity.
  • Nicole Barbieri nearly converted on a one-on-one with Middlebury keeper Emily Miller, with the goalie making a split save to preserve the tie, but the result was a second penalty stroke for Bowdoin. Kennedy converted in the 66th minute to give the Polar Bears a 2-1 victory.
  • Bowdoin outshot the visitors 24-8, with Miller making 10 saves and Clara Belitz making three stops.
