Williams Edges Bowdoin in One-Goal Men's Soccer Decision

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Gregory Andreou scored the game-winning goal with 15:45 remaining to give the Williams College men's soccer team a 1-0 win at Bowdoin on Sunday afternoon.

The Ephs rebound from a Saturday loss at Colby to improve to 3-2-0 (2-1-0 NESCAC) while the Polar Bears now stand at 2-2-0 (1-2-0) after tipping Wesleyan in OT on Saturday.

How It Happened

  • Williams controlled the pace of play through most of the opening half, holding a 6-1 advantage in shots.
  • The Ephs' best chance came off the foot of Sean Dory 11 minutes into the period from the top of the box that forced a diving stop by Bowdoin goaltender Stevie Van Siclen.
  • Bowdoin responded by setting the tone in the second half, earning a 9-4 advantage in shots.
  • CJ Masterson made a bid to break the tie in the 55th minute but his shot was saved by Christian Alcorn, who stopped six shots in the second half.
  • Williams finally broke through in the 75th minute when Mohammed Rashid played a free kick from the about 30 yards out. The skipped through defenders to the foot of Andreou, who tapped it past an oncoming Van Siclen to give the Ephs the lead.
  • Bowdoin had a pair of good late chances - headers by Levi Morant and Connor Keefe, but Alcorn was up to the task to secure the win for the visitors.
  • For the game, Alcorn made six stops (all in the second half) while Van Siclen made three.
  • Shots were even at 10-10 for the contest. Each team also had three corner kicks.

Up Next

  • Bowdoin will return to action on Wednesday night with a conference game at Bates (8:00 p.m.).
  • Williams is off until next Saturday when they host Amherst (1:00 p.m.)
