How It Happened

  • The game was a tale of two halves as the Polar Bears controlled the opening period (8-4 shot advantage) before the Cardinals rallied in the second half (9-7 shot advantage).
  • After establishing the pace of play in the first half and missing on several close chances, Bowdoin converted shortly before halftime. CJ Masterson played a perfect cross across the goal mouth to Matt Dias Costa, who headed home the game's first goal at 37:30.
  • Wesleyan settled in and came out firing in the second half, and had several opportunities to even the score that skipped just wide of net.
  • With under 11 minutes to play Wesleyan finally found the equalizer as Brandon Sousa played a corner kick through the box to Chris Kafina, who headed it inside the back post at 79:58.
  • Neither team could find the game-winner in regulation and Wesleyan held a 3-0 advantage in shots in the first extra session.
  • Midway through the second ten-minute OT session, Wesleyan's Ben Toulette was given a yellow card just outside the left side of the penalty area, setting up a Bowdoin free kick.
  • Sam Ward played the free kick into the box, where it skipped through traffic to senior back Nabil Odulate, who toed it home for the game-winner.
  • Both goalies enjoyed well-played contests as Jack Katkavich made four saves for the Cardinals and Stevie Van Siclen notched seven stops for the Polar Bears.
  • Shots were dead-even at 16-16 while Wesleyan had a slight 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
