Softball Splits Friday Night Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Bowdoin softball team split a pair of Friday games as the Polar Bears fell to Minot State 8-1 before rebounding with a 6-3 win over Simmons.

Bowdoin continues its Spring Break schedule with a doubleheader against Western New England and Endicott of Sunday afternoon. Bowdoin carries a 4-2 record so far this season.

Bowdoin allowed six runs over the opening five innings against Minot before the Polar Bears would put one on the board in the top of the sixth. After struggling to put runners on base, Jordan Gowdy opened the inning with a single to the pitcher, followed by an Emily Griffin walk to load first and second. Adriane Krul advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt that Katie Gately followed with a single through the left side to drive home Gowdy. That would be the only run Bowdoin would bring home as Minot's Jenn Spencer allowed only four hits and two walks with four strikeouts in six innings of work. Kendall Becker came in at closer to pitch a 1-2-3 inning.

The Polar Bears rebounded quickly, putting three runs up in the opening inning against Simmons, en route to their 6-3 win. Julia Geaumont drove home the first run of the game, scoring Gowdy from third, with a fly out to center. Victoria Rusch followed with an RBI to left field, scoring Griffin, and Marisa O'Toole completed the offensive scoring with an RBI single to center that drove home Gately. Bowdoin doubled its lead in the top of the third as a Claire McCarthy triple to right field drove home a pair of runners, before she too came home off a shot from Ali Miller. Simmons answered late in the game, using a three run seventh to cut into Bowdoin's lead, but the charge came to late as the Polar Bears held on for the win. Griffin went all seven innings in the circle for Bowdoin tallying eight K's with just four hits.
