Women's Basketball Pulls Away Late For Win Over Colby

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team used a huge fourth quarter to defeat Colby 71-55 on Saturday at Morrell Gymnasium.

The Polar Bears finish their first semester with a record of 5-2 while the Mules stand at 6-2 this season. The teams will play their conference game in Waterville on January 30.

Game Highlights

  • The contest was tight throughout with neither team holding a sizable advantage
  • The Mules held a slim 32-30 lead at halftime and the match was knotted at 42 apiece after three
  • Colby opened up a three-point lead, 47-44, following a Carylanne Wolfington three-pointer with 8:14 to go
  • Bowdoin rolled off a 7-0 run, regaining the lead on a Lydia Caputi lay-in, 48-47, with 7:33 to go
  • Colby later closed the gap to 51-50, but Bowdoin answered with a decisive 14-0 run to put the contest out of reach
  • Marle Curle started the run with a hoop-and-harm and Kate Kerrigan extended the lead with six consecutive points, including a lay-up, steal and lay-in in succession to give the hosts a 58-50 edge with five minutes to play
  • Shannon Brady closed the run with five straight points to give the Polar Bears a 65-50 lead with 2:45 to go

By The Numbers

  • Brady finished a game-high 25 points and seven rebounds to pace the Polar Bears
  • Kerrigan scored 10 of her 14 points after halftime while also  grabbed a team-best nine rebounds and dishing out six assists
  • Curle scored 11 points for the Polar Bears while Caputi and Rachel Norton had nine each
  • Colby stayed close thanks to the efforts of Wolfington, who ended with 20 points and 10 rebounds in the loss
  • Desi Smith also saw double-figures for the Mules with 14 points
  • Bowdoin shot 46% for the game while holding Colby to 32% - the Polar Bears also scored 17 points off 15 Mule turnovers and owned a 40-36 edge on the glass
