Bowdoin Falls to Cal Lutheran in NCAA Volleyball Quarterfinals

Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Bowdoin College women's volleyball team proved it belonged on the big stage in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Thursday evening, but lost an eventual 3-1 decision to Cal-Lutheran on the campus of Calvin College.

The Polar Bears finish a stellar season with a 26-5 record, the third-most wins in a single season in program history, the 2015 NESCAC Championship and program's first-ever NCAA Regional title. Bowdoin's two-member senior class of Hailey Wahl and Christy Jewett close out their careers as the winningest class in Bowdoin volleyball history with exactly 100 victories.

Cal Lutheran advances to the NCAA semifinals on Friday after rallying for the 20-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-23 win.

How It Happened

  • Bowdoin jumped out to the early lead, taking the first set 25-20. The Polar Bears maintained the lead throughout the set after trailing 3-0 early.  After Lutheran closed to  18-17, Bowdoin used a 5-2 surge to create some distance en route to the convincing victory
  • Cal Lutheran responded in the second set with the score tied at 10 apiece. The Regals rolled off a 5-1 to take control, cruising to an eventual 25-17 win
  • Bowdoin took a 9-5 advantage early in the third set before the Regals responded with an authoritative 11-2 run to take a 16-11 advantage. Bowdoin could get no closer than five points for the remainder of the set as Lutheran went up 2-1 with a 25-16 triumph
  • The fourth set was the closest of the night with the teams tied at 15 and 16 before Lutheran used a 4-1 run to take a 20-17 lead. With their backs to the wall, the Polar Bears were able to cut it to 24-23 following two straight must-win points, but a service error closed the deal, clinching the 25-23 win for Lutheran
