Wilson's Last-Minute Goal Lifts Women's Soccer To NCAA First Round Win

Box Score

HOBOKEN, N.J. - Nikki Wilson's first career goal came at the perfect time, with less than one minute remaining in regulation, to give the Bowdoin College women's soccer team a dramatic 3-2 victory over Johns Hopkins in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday at Stevens Institute of Technology.

The Polar Bears (13-5-1) have won eight of their last nine contests and advance to play the host Ducks tomorrow at 5:00 p.m.

How It Happened

  • Bowdoin never trailed, but twice held one goal leads only to see the Blue Jays rally to tie the game
  • In the opening half, Bowdoin jumped ahead in the 20th minute when Jamie Hofstetter headed home a feed from Maggie Godley
  • Johns Hopkins was able to level the score before halftime when Thea Harvey-Brown found the back of the net at 38:48, knotting the score at 1-1 at intermission
  • Bowdoin quickly jumped ahead in the second half, taking control after the kick-off and getting the go-ahead goal from Godley, assisted by Hofstetter, just 23 ticks into the second period
  • Again, Hopkins was able to claw back into the contest as Meg Van de loo put home a rebound with 24:06 remaining
  • Bowdoin controlled the last 15 minutes but couldn't find the go-ahead tally until under a minute to play
  • After a scramble at midfield, Hofstetter came away with the ball and slipped a through-ball to Wilson on the left side of the box. Wilson drew netminder Clara Aranguren off her line and tucked a perfectly-placed low shot just inside the right post with just 59 seconds on the clock
  • Hopkins could not get off another shot as Bowdoin held on to win
  • McCarthy was peppered with shots early in the second period and finished with ten saves, including seven in the second half
  • Hopkins led 20-13 in shots, but Bowdoin held a 8-7 edge in corner kicks

Up Next

  • This will be Bowdoin's fourth appearance in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament and third in the last four years. The Polar Bears will be looking for their first trip to the "Sweet Sixteen" of the tournament.
