Field Hockey Improves to 10-0 on the Season After 5-0 Shutout of Southern Maine

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin field hockey team secured its sixth shutout of the season on Tuesday evening in a foggy 5-0 victory over visiting Southern Maine at Ryan Field.

The second-ranked Polar Bears remain perfect at 10-0 on the season, while dropping the Huskies to 5-10.

How It Happened

  • Southern Maine staved off four Bowdoin penalty corners before the Polar Bears would convert on their fifth attempt in the 19th minute of the opening half. Kimmy Ganong inserted to Kim Kahnweiler who set up Kelsey Mullaney with a stick stop at the top of the circle. Mullaney blasted a shot to the left post for the 1-0 lead.
  • Bowdoin doubled its lead just over a minute later. Emily McColgan collected the ball in the midfield off a Southern Maine turnover and quickly fed Ganong in the circle on the left side. Ganong swept the ball in stride and directed a shot towards the opposite post to avoid the diving Amanda Kasbohm.
  • The Huskies opened the second half with several minutes of pressure in Bowdoin's defensive end, including a shot from Samantha Crosman that skidded wide left.
  • Rachel Kennedy made it 3-0 in favor of Bowdoin 2:06 into the second frame. Kennedy finished off a pass from Liz Znamierowski who sped down the right wing and centered a pass to Kennedy at the stroke line. Kennedy swept the ball as it approached and found the back of the net to extend Bowdoin's lead.
  • Intercepting a pass in Southern Maine's defensive zone, Mettler Growney fired off a shot from 18 yards out ten minutes into the half. Ganong, positioned on the stroke line, deflected the ball as it came streaking into the circle and watched her shot go top right corner for the 4-0 advantage.
  • Alexa Baumgartner rounded out the day's scoring with a successful straight shot from the top right side of the circle on another Bowdoin penalty corner, receiving the insert from Growney.
  • Kasbohm stopped 17 shots in net for the Huskies, as the Polar Bears outshot USM 30-2. Clara Belitz and Grace Linnan combined for 70 minutes of scoreless goaltending on Bowdoin's end.
