Box Score BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team rallied from a three-point deficit with under eight minutes remaining to defeat Colby 62-57 on Saturday at Morrell Gymnasium.
The Polar Bears (17-2, 5-0 NESCAC) captured their second win of the season over the Mules (12-5, 2-3 NESCAC) having also won a non-conference game in Waterville on December 6, 56-48. Bowdoin has won the last seven meetings between the schools dating back to 2011.
Shannon Brady led a balanced Bowdoin offense with 18 points, with 14 coming in the second half. Marle Curle had 15 points and four assists while Kate Kerrigan tallied 12 points with eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Sara Binkhorst also saw double figures for the Polar Bears with 12 points.
Colby was paced by 18 from Carylanne Wolfington, who scored every one of her points on her six three-pointers. She led a three-point barrage for the Mules, who netted 10 three-pointers to stay in the contest. Caitlyn Nolan had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds for Colby.
Each team took turns with seven-point leads in the opening half before a late 12-3 run gave the hosts a 28-24 lead heading into halftime. The teams traded blows in the opening ten minutes of the second half as Bowdoin maintained a slim lead despite five Colby three-pointers. Wolfington hit a three-pointer to finally tie the game, 43-43, with 9:51 to go and, following a Kerrigan lay-up, connected on another from long-distance to give the visitors the lead, 46-45, with 8:54 to go.
Colby extended their lead to 48-45 after a Nolan layup, but were stymied by the Bowdoin defense from there, going without a field goal for the next eight minutes. Meanwhile, Bowdoin hit its stride, going on a 15-4 run to pull away. Brady sparked the run with six consecutive points as the Polar Bears upped their lead to 60-52 with under 30 seconds remaining.
The Mules held a 35-34 lead on the glass, but committed 19 turnovers in the game. Bowdoin connected on 44% from the field and held Colby to 36.2%, but the Mules were able to stay within striking distance thanks to their 10 three-pointers.
Bowdoin will return to action on Friday when they host Trinity at 7:00 p.m. Colby will travel to
play at Husson on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m.
