Box Score 2 BEVERLY, Mass. - The Bowdoin College women's volleyball team finished off a perfect opening weekend with a pair of wins at the Endicott College Invitational on Saturday.
The Polar Bears survived a rally from NYU in their opening match of the day to take a dramatic 3-2 win (25-21, 25-16, 21-25, 27-29, 15-12). In the afternoon, Bowdoin dropped the first set but crushed Endicott in the final three to take a 3-1 victory (22-25, 25-18, 25-12, 25-17). It is the first 4-0 start for the Polar Bears since the 2012, when they also were perfect at the Endicott Invite. Katie Doherty was named to the All-Tournament team from the Polar Bears, who were one of just two teams (along with UMass Boston) to come away unscathed at this weekend's tournament.
Against NYU, Bowdoin was impressive en route to a 2-0 lead, but the Violets bounced back to tie the match following a thrilling 29-27 triumph in the fourth set. Trailing 8-6 in the deciding fifth, the Polar Bears got consecutive kills from Katie Doherty, Clare Geyer and Michelle Albright to take the lead for good.
Christy Jewett and Doherty were outstanding in the win. Jewett racked up 20 kills, 18 digs and four blocks while Doherty finished with 15 kills and 29 digs and four blocks. Erika Sklaver had 10 kills and seven blocks while Quincy Leech totaled a team-best 34 assists.
After a slow start against the host Gulls, the Polar Bears righted the ship in a big way by cruising in the final three sets of a 3-1 win. Jewett put home 15 kills to go with 10 digs and five blocks while Doherty added 11 kills, 19 digs and four service aces. Sklaver added a dozen kills and seven blocks as Leech dished out 27 assists.
The Polar Bears will look to continue their hot streak to open the campaign on Tuesday evening when they host the University of New England in their home-opener at 6:30 p.m.
