Men's Soccer Opens Season With Shutout Victory Over Endicott

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College men's soccer team scored twice in a nine-minute span in the second half to take a season-opening 2-0 win Wednesday afternoon over Endicott.

The Polar Bears (1-0-0) claim the first-ever meeting between the schools in men's soccer, as the Gulls (0-3-0) remain winless on the year.

Neither team could find the back of the net in an evenly-played first half as Bowdoin held a slim 4-2 shot advantage at the break. The Polar Bears picked up the pace early in the second half and were rewarded with a pair of pretty goals to take the lead.

Just one minute into the second period, Andrew Jones took control of the ball on the right wing and centered to Ben Citrin. Citrin connected on a diagonal through-ball to Matt Dias-Costa in the box, who finished it off inside the left post to score Bowdoin's first goal of the season.

Just over eight minutes later, Bowdoin earned a corner and Jones played the ball short to Daniel Melong, who chipped a long pass across the box to Citrin on the far post. Citrin banged home the perfectly-placed cross to give the hosts a 2-0 lead at 54:25.

Noah Safian made the lead stand with a pair of saves in net for Bowdoin. Endicott's Alex Jorge stopped two shots as well in the loss. The Polar Bears held a 10-2 shot advantage in the contest.

The Polar Bears will open their NESCAC campaign on Saturday as they play at Wesleyan at 11:00 a.m. The Gulls will return to action at home against Salem State at noon on Saturday.
