Amherst Edges Bowdoin in Battle of Top-Ten Women's Tennis Teams

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Amherst College women's tennis team prevailed in singles action to edge Bowdoin, 6-3, in a battle of top-ten squads Friday evening in Brunswick.

The fourth-ranked Jeffs improve to 8-2 (1-0 NESCAC) with their sixth-straight win. The seventh-ranked Polar Bears see their seven-match win streak snapped as they fall to 10-3 (3-1 NESCAC).

The Polar Bears opened well in doubles play, getting wins from Kate Winingham/Samantha Stalder (8-3) at #2 and Pilar Giffenig/Tiffany Cheng (8-5) at #3. But the Jeffs rebounded to take five of six singles matches to earn the victory. Winingham accounted for the lone Bowdoin singles point with a three-set win at #2 (6-4, 5-7, 6-3). Amherst took straight-set wins at the other five positions.

The Polar Bears will return to action on Sunday when they host Emory at 9:30 a.m.
