Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Keene State

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Bowdoin baseball team split a twinbill in its return to action against Keene State Wednesday afternoon.

The Polar Bears (7-3) continued their successful Florida swing with a 7-4 opening win against the Owls (3-4), before dropping a 13-9 decision in the second game.

Chad Martin tallied his first of two RBIs in the game, coming off a putout in the first inning which allowed Sam Canales to score from third. Both teams were held scoreless until the fifth inning, as Keene broke through with four runs off five hits to take the lead. The Polar Bears mustered an offensive inning in the bottom of the sixth, scoring six consecutive runs with two outs on the board. Kyle LeBlanc knocked in a pair of runs off a single, following a bases loaded walk for Duncan Taylor. John Lefeber, Sam Canales, and Martin tallied consecutive RBI singles to put Bowdoin up top 7-4. David Zabinksy came in to close out the game, forcing the Owls into a 1-2-3 seventh. Jay Loughlin started on the mound for Bowdoin, pitching 4 1/3 innings while allowing four runs off six hits. Jon Fraser earned went 1 2/3 for the Polar Bears, allowing just two hits, before giving way to Zabinsky in the seventh.

A high scoring second game forced the Polar Bears to burn through six pitchers, combining for 14 hits and 13 runs. Erik Jacobsen and Peter Cimini opened the game with back-to-back RBI singles in the first. Keene answered right back, cutting Bowdoin's lead in half in the bottom of the inning. Sean Mullaney immediately made it 3-1 in favor of Bowdoin, with Martin homering in the third to push the Polar Bears to 4-1. The Owls continued to leave runners on base as Bowdoin tacked on three more in the fourth. Lefeber, Canales, and Jacobsen each hit an RBI double as Bowdoin took a commanding 7-1 lead.  Keene tallied a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, but used a ten run sixth to upend the Polar Bears. Bowdoin gave up eight hits, none for an extra base, and committed one error as the Owls took the lead. Bowdoin tacked on its ninth and final run in its final at bat, with Lefeber collecting another RBI single. Lefeber led the team, going 4 for 5 with a double and two RBIs. Jacobsen went 2 for 3 at the plate, also adding a double and pair of RBIs.

Bowdoin rounds out its spring break schedule with another doubleheader on Friday morning. The Polar Bears will play Rutgers-Camden beginning at 10:00 a.m.
