Women's Tennis Suffers First Losses of the Season to Top-Ten Squads

POMONA, Calif. - The Bowdoin College women's tennis team suffered a pair of extremely close losses to top-ten squads this weekend.

The seventh-ranked Polar Bears dropped 5-4 decisions to fifth-ranked Claremont Mudd Scripps and 11th-ranked Pomona Pitzer to suffer defeat for the first time this season. Bowdoin (3-2) will return to action Monday against Denison.

Sunday against Pomona, Bowdoin won at #2, 3 and 5 singles courtesy of Tiffany Cheng (6-2, 6-0), Joulia Likhanskaia (6-3, 6-1), and Emma Lewis (7-5, 6-2). Kate Winingham and Pilar Giffenig combined to win at #2 doubles for the Polar Bears, 8-3. Winingham and Giffenig almost pulled out the win for Bowdoin, as the duo both fell in hard-fought, three-set singles decisions.

Saturday against CMS, the Polar Bears also fell in a one-match decision. After Winingham and Giffenig combined for a win at #2 doubles (8-3), Bowdoin got singles wins again from Cheng (6-3, 6-1) and Likhanskaia (6-4, 6-3) at #2 and #3 with Samantha Stalder also earning a win at #4 (6-4, 7-5).
