Krul Leads Offense in Softball Split Decision

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Bowdoin softball team continued its spring break schedule with a split decision against two out of region teams.

The Polar Bears (4-2) posted an 8-4 win over Stevenson University in its first of two games Friday morning. Bowdoin outhit Monmouth (Ill.) in its second contest, but ultimately fell 4-3.

The Polar Bears used a big fourth inning push to put four runs on the board and would never trail Stevenson again. Arianne Krul paced Bowdoin at the plate, going 3-4 and scoring a pair of runs and connecting for two singles and a double in the win. The Mustangs opened the game with a leadoff homerun followed by a walk. Julia Geaumont was able to retire the next three consecutive batters to escape the first inning. Bowdoin responded with a one-run first off a sacrifice fly from Nicole Nelson to bring around Alana Luzzio. The Mustangs mustered one run in each of the second, fifth, and seventh innings, but Bowdoin matched its opponent with an RBI single from Tracy Shirey in the second and sacrifice flies by Krul and Katie Kaufman in the fifth and sixth. Bowdoin's four run fourth was the result of back-to-back RBI doubles from Hanna Wurgaft and Katie Gately as well as single from Nelson. Kaufman took advantage of several Mustang errors to score Bowdoin's first run of the inning. Julia Geaumont went the distance for Bowdoin on the mound, allowing just one earned run, four hits and four walks while recording one strikeout.

Despite collecting 10 hits in their second game of the day, Bowdoin was unable to overcome an early 3-0 hole after the first inning. The Polar Bears took an early 3-2 lead in the top of the third off a sacrifice fly by Krul and RBI single from Gately. Once again, Krul went 2-3 at the plate and drove in one run. After allowing another Monmouth run in the fourth Bowdoin closed the gap off an RBI single by Wurgaft. Luzio started in the circle for Bowdoin, going four innings and striking out two. Melissa DellaTorre came in to closeout the game, pitching two innings, and held Monmouth hitless while fanning three.

Bowdoin returns to action for a pair of games on Sunday. The Polar Bears face Endicott at 9:00 a.m. followed by Wesleyan at 11:00 a.m.
