Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla - The Bowdoin softball team split its opening day of the 2014 season in a pair of high scoring matchups.
The Polar Bears (1-1) started the day with a 10-8 win over Lesley, followed by a 7-6 loss to Lake Forest.
Opening the day against Lesley, Bowdoin grabbed the lead with a strong third inning sparked by a three-run triple from Cielle Collins. Casey Correa, Hanna Wurgaft, Emily Griffin, and Collins combined for eight hits and five RBIs to lead Bowdoin. Pitching 5 2/3 innings for the Polar Bears, Julia Geaumont earned the win with four strikeouts while allowing 13 hits.
After allowing an opening inning solo shot to Lesley, Bowdoin was on the scoreboard with an RBI single from Katie Gately. Alana Luzzio's groundout in the second inning allowed Dimitria Spathakis to come around and score, putting Bowdoin ahead 2-1. The triple from Collins contributed to a five-run third for the Polar Bears, putting Bowdoin ahead for good. Lesley would pull within one following a pair of runs in the fourth, but Bowdoin matched the Lynx in the bottom of the inning to maintain its edge. Melissa DellaTorre earned the save for the Polar Bears with 1.1 innings of work.
The Polar Bears dropped a tight game to Lake Forest in their second game of the day. Bowdoin jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the second, beginning with a double from Gately. Advancing to third on a groundout by Correa, Gately recorded the team's first run off an RBI single from Geaumont. The Polar Bears tacked on two more off a sacrifice fly from Tory Rusch and an error that allowed Geaumont to advance. Lake Forest took control of the game in the sixth inning, following an RBI double, single, and groundout accounting for a three-run output. Alana Luzzio pitched five innings for the Polar Bears, allowing six runs off ten hits while striking out four.
Bowdoin faces Salve Regina tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. followed by an 11:00 a.m. game against Rhode Island College.
