Box Score WATERVILLE, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team dominated the glass and Megan Phelps finished with 16 points and eight rebounds to help the Polar Bears deal Colby its first loss of the year in a 56-48 victory Saturday.
Bowdoin moved to 6-2 overall, while the Mules dropped to 7-1.
Colby forced 24 Polar Bear turnovers in the game, but Bowdoin had a huge 43-24 margin in rebounding. The Polar Bears had five players with five rebounds or more, while the Mules had none.
Phelps was 8-for-12 from the field, using a variety of inside moves and hard drives to the basket.
Sara Binkhorst added 15 points on 5-for-10 shooting, while
Siena Mitman and
Kate Kerrigan both had seven points. Kerrigan had four offensive rebounds and tied Phelps for game-high with eight. Carylanne Wolfington led Colby with 15 points.
Colby took its only lead of the game at 21-19 after going on a 9-0 run late in the opening half. The Polar Bears went ahead 26-23 before the break as
Marle Curle drained a 3-point shot with 28 seconds to go.
The Mules came out sluggish in the second half and Bowdoin cashed in. With Bowdoin up 27-25, the Polar Bears used an 8-0 run to make it a 10-point game at 35-25 with 15:25 to play. Bowdoin led by as many as 16 points in the period before a late Colby 8-0 run closed the final margin to eight points.
The Polar Bears will close out their first semester on Wednesday when they travel to play at Maine-Farmington at 7:00 p.m.
