Brady Leads Women's Basketball to Coastal Maine Classic Crown Over MIT

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Tournament MVP Shannon Brady scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Bowdoin College women's basketball team over MIT, 63-45, to claim the 2014 Coastal Maine Classic crown on Wednesday evening.

The Polar Bears close out the calendar year with a record of 9-2 while MIT drops to 5-6. In addition to Brady being named Classic MVP, Marle Curle was selected to the All-Classic team for Bowdoin along with MIT's Maya Ramachandran.

Brady connected on 10 of her 17 shots from the field and grabbed five offensive boards while earning two steals and a block. Curle finished with 15 for Bowdoin while Sara Binkhorst added 11 and six assists. Kate Kerrigan tallied six points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Ramachandran had a team-high 14 points and 10 rebounds for MIT, who also  got 11 points from Liana Ilutzi and eight points and seven rebounds from Sabrina Drammis.

Bowdoin scored the first five points of the game and never trailed in the opening period. MIT was able to cut into the Polar Bear lead and trail by only four, 15-11, with 12 minutes remaining in the frame but Bowdoin responded with a 14-0 run, highlighted by a pair of Binkhorst three-pointers, to take a commanding 18-point lead. The hosts carried a 29-17 lead into the break.

Despite playing only five players in the opening 30 minutes, MIT was able to chip away at Bowdoin's lead early in the second half, cutting the advantage to as few as eight points on two occasions, including following a three-pointer from Osheiza Otori that made it 42-34 with nine minutes to go. Bowdoin replied with a decisive 9-0 surge, highlighted by a three-pointer from Lauren Petit, and pushed the lead back to 17 points with under six minutes to go. The Polar Bears led by as many as 22 points in the second half before settling for the 18-point win.

Bowdoin finished at 42%  shooting for the game and held MIT to 38%. The Polar Bears owned a 37-32 edge on the glass and committed just eight turnovers compared to 16 for the Engineers. Bowdoin converted 25 points off the 16 MIT miscues and put home 15 second-chance points in the victory.

The Polar Bears will return to action Sunday with another home game against Rhode Island College at 1:00 p.m. MIT will play on Saturday at home against Springfield College at 2:00 p.m.




Bates 80, Clark 57

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Molly Brown scored a game-high 27 points to lead the Bates College women's basketball team to a 80-57 win over Clark University on day two of the Coastal Maine Classic on Wednesday at Bowdoin College.

The Bobcats end the tourney with a 1-1 mark and improve to 7-4 on the season while the Cougars finish the classic winless and fall to 3-7 this year.

Brown connected on 9-15 from the field, including four three-pointers, to end with 27 points while also adding six rebounds, four steals and three assists. Allie Coppola scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Bates while Chelsea Nason scored 13 points for the Bobcats. Sam O'Gara scored 17 points while adding four steals and three assists to pace the Cougars. Aretha Sullivan kept her team close with 10 opening half points and finished with 15 for the contest.

Brown scored 21 of her 27 points in an explosive first half as the Bobcats used a late surge to take a 42-29 lead at halftime.  Bates pushed their lead to as many as 29 points in the second half en route to the win.

Brown represented Bates on the All-Classic team while Sullivan earned All-Classic honors for Clark.
