Box Score WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Bowdoin College women's volleyball team returned to the NCAA Tournament with a flourish on Friday afternoon, sweeping Regis 3-0 in a First Round match hosted by Williams College.
The Polar Bears (22-8) advance to the Second Round of the Tournament for the third time in the last four seasons with the 25-11, 25-11, 25-17 victory. Regis ends its season with a record of 24-9. Bowdoin will play their Second Round match Saturday against MIT at 2:30 p.m.
Bowdoin wasted little time in the opening set, winning the first seven points and opening up a 15-2 advantage en route to cruising to the 25-11 triumph. It was more of the same in the second set as the Polar Bears sprinted to a 7-1 advantage and never looked back, winning by an identical 25-11 tally.
The third set was the most competitive, as the squads parried to a 7-7 tie through the first 14 points. Bowdoin took control from there, however, creating some space with a 5-1 run sparked by a pair of Erika Skalver kills. Regis closed to within 12-10 but Bowdoin responded with a 9-1 surge, capped by kills from Carina Spiro and Clare Geyer to put the contest out of reach.
Christy Jewett totaled 12 kills and eight digs. With the total, she broke Julia Calareso's record for single season kills at Bowdoin (405) and now owns 411 on the campaign. Sklaver led Bowdoin with 13 kills and no errors to go with five blocks. Katie Doherty posted 13 digs while Quincy Leech dished out 27 assists to go with nine digs.
Bowdoin has a 3-11 record all-time against MIT, but has carried the series of late, winning three of the last four meetings, including a 3-2 victory in their last match in 2013.
