Women's Soccer Blanks Nationally-Ranked Brandeis in Saturday Win

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Abby Einwag scored a pair of first-half goals and Kiersten Turner added two assists and a score of her own in a 4-0 victory for the Bowdoin women's soccer team over nationally-ranked Brandeis on Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears (5-1-1) extended their win streak over the Judges (6-2-0) to three straight victories dating back to a 2-1 win in 2011. Bowdoin notched its fifth shutout of the season, and second in a row, with the win over 17th ranked Brandeis.

Bowdoin netted its first goal of the game just 8:51 into the contest, as Turner charged down the right side of the field towards the top of the 18-yard box and dished off a pass to Einwag on the opposite side. Einwag chipped the ball past a charging Michelle Savuto from Brandeis and connected with the right corner of the net. Turner and Einwag made an identical play at 18:50 to put the Polar Bears on top 2-0. Bowdoin held a slight 8-7 advantage in shots during the opening half, forcing Savuto to make two saves. Bridget McCarthy stopped four shots for Bowdoin to preserve the clean slate.

Turner scored a goal of her own less than two minutes into the second half. Beating a pair of defenders and drawing the goalie out of position, Turner capitalized on the one-on-one situation and buried Bowdoin's third goal of the game. Brandeis' greatest scoring opportunity came midway through the half as Sapir Edalati released a shot that sailed upwards towards the top of the net forcing McCarthy to make a punch clear that careened off the crossbar and rebounded back into the field of play. Bowdoin's fourth and final goal of the game came fifteen minutes into the half off the head of Molly Popolizio. Becky Stoneman lofted a free kick into the box where Popolozio connected to put Bowdoin on top 4-0.

McCarthy collected nine saves en route to a scoreless 68:29 of play, as Casey Krause came in to record 21:31 scoreless minutes. Savuto tallied four saves in net for the Judges as Katy Lehman came in with six minutes to play and made a stop of her own. Bowdoin outshot Brandeis 18-15 with a 4-1 corner kick advantage.

Brandeis and Bowdoin both return to action in a pair of home contests on October 1 as the Judges host Smith beginning at 7:00 PM and thePolar Bears face Southern Maine at 4:00 PM.
