Women's Basketball Completes Weekend Sweep at Tip-Off Tournament

SALEM, Mass - The Bowdoin women's basketball team defeated host Salem Sate 81-49 to capture the Tip-Off Tournament title on Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears (2-0) outpaced the Vikings (1-1) in every statistical category en route to the tournament win.

Bowdoin's offense was paced by Marle Curle who had 19 points, six rebounds, and one steal. Curle was named tournament MVP at the conclusion of the game. Megan Phelps was the team's second leading scorer on the day with 16 points, nine assists, three steals, which landed her All-Tournament recognition. Sarah Binkhorst and Shannon Brady each scored in the double-digits with 13-point and 10-point games. Rachel Carter was Salem States' leading scorer with an 18-point game.

The Vikings jumped out a 7-3 lead in the opening four minutes of play, but the Polar Bears would take permanent control of the scoreboard at 14:48 as Brady sank a shot to the team ahead 10-9. Salem State stayed within striking distance through the remainder of the half, never trailing by more than five, until Bowdoin closed out the final three minutes with shots from Brady and Binkhorst to lead the Vikings 26-20 at the half.

Phelps and Salem's Ashley White traded three-pointers in the opening minute of player. Another three-point shot from Curle sparked a 20-5 run for the Polar Bears, which was capped by another Curle three-pointer to extend the score to 52-28 at 12:31. Carter accounted for all the Vikings' offense over the next four minutes as she tallied nine points off a combination of threes, free throws, and layups. Salem State was unable to put together an offensive run to successfully chip away at the Bowdoin lead, as the Polar Bears closed out the final five minutes of play with a 16-7 run.

Bowdoin shot 44% from the field and 50% from outside, while holding the Vikings to 31%. The Polar Bears edged the hosts 49-40 in rebounds and minimized turnovers, allowing only four points off the change of possession, while capitalizing with 25 points off Viking turnovers.

The Polar Bears return to action with their first home game of the year, on November 19. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM as the Bowdoin plays host to Endicott.
