Women's Volleyball Mounts Comeback To Tip Wesleyan

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to take a 3-2 win over Wesleyan Friday evening at Morrell Gymnasium.

Despite struggling at first, the Polar Bears (17-4, 6-1 NESCAC) never trailed in the fourth or fifth sets en route to the win by set scores of 24-26, 25-7, 22-25, 25-11, 15-11, and extend their win streak to ten matches. The Cardinals (6-11, 2-5 NESCAC) had won four of the last five matches entering Friday.

Christy Jewett led all players with 21 kills while also posting 12 digs and four aces in the win for Bowdoin. Sophia Cornew had 44 assists, 12 digs and four aces for the Polar Bears while Katie Doherty added 12 kills, 13 digs and four blocks. Taylor Vail had 15 digs for Bowdoin.

Kim Farris had 12 kills for the Cardinals, who also got eight kills and 13 digs from Kate Centofanti. Claire Larson had 33 assists while Rachel Savage collected 22 digs in the loss.

The Cardinals closed the opening set on an 11-6 run to take a 26-24 win before Bowdoin rebounded to take a convincing 25-7 victory to knot the match at 1-1.

Wesleyan answered with a commanding 12-5 lead early in the third set, only to see Bowdoin use a 10-2 run to take the lead on an Ellie Brennan kill, 15-14. The Cardinals responded with a run of their own, going on a 8-2 surge to take a 22-17 advantage. Wesleyan won a marathon point to take a 23-20 edge later in the frame and closed out the set with a 25-22 victory.

As with the second set, Bowdoin cruised in the fourth to even the match. The Polar Bears jumped to a 7-1 lead, forcing a Cardinal timeout, and then quickly pushed it to 12-3 en route to 25-11 win.

In the decisive fifth set, Bowdoin took an early 3-0 lead thanks to a pair of Cornew aces and used a 5-1 run, sparked by three Jewett kills, to take a 11-5 lead. The Cardinals would not go away, however, as they rolled off a 6-0 run later in the set to close the gap to 12-11, forcing a Bowdoin timeout. Coming out of the break, Emese Gaal put home a crucial kill to make it 13-11. A Doherty block for Bowdoin made it 14-11 and Gaal finished it off with the game-clinching kill off a feed from Cornew.

The Cardinals will travel to play at Bates on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The Polar Bears will host Senior Day festivities against Trinity at 2:00 p.m. in Morrell Gymnasium.
