Polar Bears Split Matches at Opening Night of MIT Invitational

BEVERLY, Mass. - The Bowdoin College women's volleyball team lost its first game of the season but rebounded in the nightcap at Day One of the MIT Invitational on Friday evening.

The Polar Bears won the first set against Springfield, but dropped an eventual 3-1 (15-25, 25-15, 25-16, 25-18) decision. Bowdoin bounced back to smother Mount Ida 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-15) in the late match to move to 8-1 on the season. Both contests were played at Endicott College.

Against Springfield, Melissa Haskell racked up 12 kills and nine digs for Bowdoin. Emese Gaal and Ellie Brennan had seven kills each while Sophia Cornew notched 31 assists while Hillary Cederna led the squad with 13 digs.

Bowdoin used a balanced attack to overwhelm Mount Ida as first-year Hailey Wahl led the team with seven kills while Emese Gaal notched six, including five aces. Luisa LaSalle had 22 assists and four aces for Bowdoin, who got a team-best nine digs from McKenzie Kessel.

The Polar Bears will play a pair of matches on Saturday, against Roger Williams (10:00 a.m.) and Newbury (2:00 p.m.).
