Box Score 2 BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College softball team celebrated its home opening day with a pair of mercy-rule wins over Thomas on Monday afternoon.
The Polar Bears took game one in six innings, 8-0, before taking a five-inning, 9-1 victory in game two. Bowdoin improves to 15-8 this season with the wins. Thomas falls to 3-15 on the year.
Toni DaCampo led the Bowdoin offense with five hits and four RBI in the doubleheader while Amy Hackett, Caroline Dewar and Gen Barlow each had four hits. Dewar scored four times for the Polar Bears, who had 26 hits in 11 innings of play on Monday. Molly Woodward led Thomas with two hits on the afternoon.
Bowdoin wasted little time putting game one out of reach, scoring four times in the first inning. Dewar singled, stole second and came home on a double by DaCampo. Hackett followed with a run-scoring single and Casey Correa ripped a line drive home run to give the hosts a 4-0 lead. Bowdoin tagged on four more runs in the sixth to finish the game, as Dewar ripped an RBI double and came home on a Barlow single to invoke the eight-run rule.
Melissa DellaTorre was nearly unhittable for Bowdoin, allowing just two singles and striking out nine over six innings for the win. Sara Pavento took the loss after permitting four earned runs and 13 hits over 5.2 frames.
The Polar Bears took another early lead in the nightcap, scoring twice on a groundout by Dewar to plate Hillary Smyth and another DaCampo single to score Barlow. Thomas was able to score their only run of the day in the third, trimming the lead to 2-1 on a Sara Moynihan groundout that scored Kimberly Grant.
Bowdoin scored seven runs over the final three innings, however, and finished off the win with a two-run single by Smith and a DaCampo single down the left field line to clinch the 9-1 win with two outs in the fifth. Tricia Thibodeau tossed five innings of four-hit ball for Bowdoin, allowing just the single run to earn the win. Kelsey Crown took the loss for the Terriers after permitting seven earned runs over 4.2 frames of work.
Bowdoin will return to action with a home doubleheader against Southern Maine on April 11. Thomas will play their home-opener on Wednesday afternoon against Maine-Farmington.
