Henrikson Leads Polar Bears to NESCAC Quarterfinal Victory Over Wesleyan

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Jill Henrikson scored 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Bowdoin College women's basketball team to a 53-37 victory over Wesleyan in the NESCAC Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at Morrell Gymnasium.

The third-seeded Polar Bears improve to 19-6 this season and remain unbeaten all-time in NESCAC Tournament games at Morrell Gymnasium (22-0). The sixth-seeded Cardinals finish their season with a record of 14-9. Bowdoin advances to the NESCAC semifinals for the 12th consecutive season and will face Tufts at Amherst College next Saturday, February 25. Game times will be announced on Monday.

Henrikson hit 5-9 from the field, including three three-pointers, and all nine free throws she took to go with her dozen boards and four assists. She was the lone player in the contest to finish in double figures. Kaitlin Donahoe pitched in nine points for the Polar Bears, who also got seven points from Allie Piscina. Eileen Gaffney finished with nine points and seven rebounds in the loss for Wesleyan.

Bowdoin sprinted to a 6-0 lead on six consecutive points from Henrikson to start the game, but Wesleyan rebounded with a 13-2 surge, keyed by a Kellyann Rooney three-pointer, to take a 13-8 advantage midway through the opening period. The Polar Bears replied with an 8-0 run to take lead and would never trail again.

Bowdoin took command of the game with a key 14-0 run shortly before intermission. Henrikson scored 10 points during the spurt, including a pair of three-pointers as the hosts took a 33-20 edge into halftime. Wesleyan could get no closer than 13 points in the second half as Bowdoin's defense held the Cardinals to their second-lowest scoring output of the season.

The Polar Bears connected on just 31.5% from the field in the game, but the Cardinals hit just 24.6%. Bowdoin held a 46-44 edge in rebounding and connected on 14-20 free throws while Wesleyan attempted just one in the entire game.
