Polar Bears Post Biggest Win Over Colby in Men's Hoops Since 2001

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College men's basketball team took command in the second half of a 67-40 win over Colby on Saturday at Morrell Gymnasium.

The Polar Bears (13-5, 3-3 NESCAC) complete a season sweep of the Mules (6-12, 1-5) after also beating the Mules 84-68 in Waterville on December 9. The 27-point margin of victory is the largest by Bowdoin over Colby in over a decade, dating back to a 32-point win in 2001.

Andrew Madlinger led Bowdoin with 18 points, including a sharp 4-6 from three-point range and, along with the inside work of Maximilian Staiger and John Swords, keyed Bowdoin's big second half. Staiger and Swords each finished with 10 points and six rebounds in the victory. Will Hanley, Bowdoin's leading scorer this season, faced constant double teams and dished out a season-best nine assists to go with seven rebounds and nine points. No Colby player saw double figures as the Mules were led by eight points apiece from Eric Beaulieu and Shane Rogers.

A late Polar Bear surge in the first half gave the hosts a 28-20 lead at intermission. Bowdoin opened the second half with a three-pointer from Madlinger and four consecutive lay-ins by Staiger pushed the Polar Bear lead to double figures. Madlinger scored eight straight points to spark a 17-2 run that gave Bowdoin a 48-27 lead with 12:25 to go. Swords capped the strong second half with a pair of thunderous dunks to seal the win.

Bowdoin connected on 51.9% of its shots in the win and held Colby to just 31.1%. The Polar Bears also held a 38-21 edge on the glass.
